Why Sanming

Located in western Fujian Province in China, Sanming—historically referred to as Minzhong—is a prefecture-level municipality positioned between the Wuyi and Daiyun mountain ranges. Covering nearly 23,000 square kilometers, the region's geography is overwhelmingly mountainous, with mountains comprising 82 percent of its territory alongside tracts of arable land and water. Sanming shares borders with several Fujian administrative areas, including Nanping, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, and Longyan, as well as Jiangxi Province to the west.

Administratively formed through the mid-twentieth-century combination of Sanyuan and Mingxi counties before achieving city status in 1960, Sanming possesses a rich historical footprint. Taining County features well-preserved Ming Dynasty architecture that serves as a key site for studying historical Chinese building styles. Additionally, Ninghua County's Shibi Village is recognized as the originating place of the Hakka people, while Youxi County is notable as the birthplace of the scholar Zhu Xi.

Sanming is celebrated for its natural surroundings, containing four protected national parks and being recognized as a notably green municipality. Its varied terrain is distinguished by Karst topography and Danxia landforms. Among its most prominent destinations is the UNESCO-recognized Taining Golden Lake Geopark, featuring a scenic water area stretching over 60 kilometers at the southern end of the Wuyi Mountains. Other key geological highlights include the Yong-an Taoyuan Cave along the Yan River, the Linying Stone Forest in Dahu Village, and subterranean sites like Yuhua Cave and Goose Cave.

Beyond its rock formations, the region contains several natural reserves, including Jiangle Longxi Mountain, Xingkou Geshikao, the Shaxian Nanmu Forest, and Yong-an Tianbao Rock, all recognized for harboring rare animal species. These protected environments provide essential habitats for local wildlife amid the area's extensive forested landscapes.

The culinary culture of Sanming is defined by distinct local specialties, most prominently Sha County snacks, which are celebrated throughout China and designated as intangible cultural heritage. Yong'an and Ninghua counties also offer their own celebrated local food varieties. For those planning a visit, the ideal period to explore Taining Golden Lake runs from April through October, and the region is accessible by air via Sanming Shaxian Airport.
