Why Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia, serving as the country's primary hub for both commerce and government. Located on the southern section of a central plateau at an elevation of roughly 1,279 metres (4,196 feet), the rapidly growing urban center recorded a population of approximately 2,204,059 in 2022. It forms a key transit node, connecting to major highways that extend north, south, east, and west across the nation. English functions as the official administrative language, while regional languages such as Bemba, Tonga, and Chichewa are commonly spoken on the streets.

The region has a long history of human habitation, with archaeological evidence of settlements dating to the 6th century and village sites identified from around the 11th century. By the 17th or 18th century, the area became home to the Lenje and Soli peoples, with the modern city situated along the boundary of their historic territories. During the 19th century, slave traders from coastal regions caused significant disruption, compelling local groups to frequently relocate their non-permanent agricultural settlements.

Modern Lusaka was established in 1905 within a British protectorate controlled by the British South Africa Company. Originally created as a railway water stop along a line built to transport minerals from the Copperbelt to Cape Town, it was named after Chief Lusaaka, a local Lenje leader. White Afrikaner farmers subsequently settled in the vicinity, transforming the location into a regional agricultural trading base. In 1913, local governance was granted to a board elected by these residents.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, colonial authorities selected Lusaka to replace Livingstone as the territory's capital due to its central location on the railway line and primary road intersections. Following planning and construction efforts involving figures such as Stanley Adshead and Governor Hubert Winthrop Young, the government officially transferred its administrative headquarters to Lusaka in May 1935.

After a period of administrative shifting during the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Lusaka was named the capital of independent Zambia in 1964. Independence triggered significant infrastructure investments, including the building of national government facilities, a new airport, and the University of Zambia. Today, the city encompasses affluent residential areas such as Woodlands, Ibex Hill, and Rhodes Park, alongside informal shanty towns that emerged on its southern and western edges following extensive internal migration.
