Why Jincheng
Jincheng is a prefecture-level city situated in the southeastern corner of Shanxi province, China, bordering Henan province to its south and southeast. Covering an area of 9,490 square kilometers with a population of approximately 2.2 million people, the region is recognized as an early origin point of Chinese civilization. Local cultural traditions link the area to several foundational figures of Chinese mythology, including Nüwa, Jingwei, Yu Gong, Shennong, and the Emperors Yao and Shun.
Human habitation in the surrounding territory extends back tens of thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries include the Tashui cave site in Lingchuan County, which dates from 70,000 to 100,000 years ago, and the late Paleolithic Xiachuan site in Qinshui County, showing human presence over 20,000 years ago. Historically, Jincheng featured prominently during the Warring States period, serving as a setting where the Jin territory was partitioned among Zhao, Wei, and Han, as well as hosting the major Battle of Changping in present-day Gaoping. Over successive imperial dynasties, its administrative designations shifted through names such as Shangdang Shire, Jianxing Shire, Jianzhou, and Zezhoufu.
Geographically, the main urban core sits within the center of the Zezhou basin, defined by terrain that rises in the northwest and lowers toward the southeast. The landscape comprises medium and low mountains, rolling hills, and river valleys, along with 188,920 hectares of arable land. Although heavy industry historically impacted local air quality, environmental initiatives have created vast parks and ecological reserves, expanded tree planting, relocated or closed major industrial polluters, and encouraged cleaner energy sources like coalbed methane.
Jincheng contains extensive mineral wealth, particularly high-grade anthracite coal, which underlies more than 56 percent of the land, alongside a major coal mine methane field in Qinshui County. In addition to mining enterprises managed primarily by Jincheng Anthracite Mining Group, modern manufacturing thrives via a large Foxconn campus that produces fiber optic parts and millions of mobile phone mechanical components each year.
The city experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with cold, dry winters and warm, humid summers, with the majority of annual precipitation falling between June and September. Jincheng is accessible by road via China National Highway 207 and by rail along the Taiyuan–Jiaozuo Railway, serving both Jincheng Station and Jincheng East Station. While there is no commercial airport within the city itself, regional flight connections are available in nearby cities including Zhengzhou, Luoyang, and Changzhi.
