Why Dongying
Dongying is a coastal prefecture-level city situated along the northern shore of Shandong Province in the People's Republic of China. Positioned on the Yellow River Delta, the municipality spans 7,923 square kilometers and features a coastline extending 350 kilometers along Laizhou Bay and Bohai Bay. Bordering Binzhou to the west, Zibo to the southwest, and Weifang to the south, the city is widely recognized as the primary base for the Shengli Oilfield, the second-largest oilfield in the nation.
Administratively, Dongying is structured into three districts—Dongying, Hekou, and Kenli—along with the two counties of Guangrao and Lijin. These divisions encompass 43 township-level units, including towns, townships, and subdistricts. The urban economy is closely tied to its natural resources, supporting a vast manufacturing sector that includes petrochemistry, saline chemistry, textiles, papermaking, and rubber tire production.
The history of the area traces back to the Tang Dynasty, when Emperor Taizong established military camps during an Eastern Expedition, eventually leading to the formation of Dongying Village. In 1964, the site became the headquarters for petroleum exploration in northern China. The State Council approved the creation of Dongying as a prefecture-level city in 1982, and it was formally established in 1983 to foster the growth of the Shengli Oilfield and the Yellow River Delta region.
For cultural exploration, visitors can head to Guangrao County to visit the Dongying History Museum. This facility houses over 12,000 artifacts—including hundreds of high-grade cultural relics—and incorporates the historic Sun Wu Temple within its grounds. Guangrao County is also home to the Sun Tzu Cultural Tourism Area in the Chengdong New District, a 4A-level attraction focused on the legacy of Sun Tzu amidst natural and recreational spaces.
Dongying features a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with four marked seasons. Summers are warm and humid, with July averaging 27.0 °C alongside the majority of the annual 527.7 millimeters of rainfall, while winters are cold and dry, averaging −2.2 °C in January. The city is served by Dongying Shengli Airport, passenger rail services at Dongying Railway Station and Dongying South Railway Station, and a central bus terminal on Huanghe Road offering direct routes to major cities including Beijing, Jinan, and Qingdao.
