Why Huaibei
Huaibei is a prefecture-level municipality located in the northern portion of Anhui Province in eastern China. Positioned at the intersection of Anhui, Jiangsu, and Henan provinces, it shares borders with Suzhou to the east, Bengbu to the south, Bozhou to the west, as well as Henan to the northwest and Jiangsu to the northeast. Spanning an administrative territory of 2,741 square kilometers, the city encompasses an integrated urban area that recorded a population of nearly two million residents during the 2020 census. The municipal jurisdiction is organized into four county-level divisions, comprising Xiangshan, Lieshan, and Duji districts alongside Suixi County, which are further divided into various towns, townships, and subdistricts.
The region features a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, moisture-rich summers and cool to cold, dry winter seasons. Geographically, Huaibei occupies a strategic position in northern Anhui, with special territorial arrangements such as Duanyuan town in Duji District forming an exclave that borders Xuzhou in neighboring Jiangsu Province. The surrounding area contains vast natural mineral reserves, holding significant deposits of coal, limestone, fire clay, marble, iron, copper, gold, silver, nickel, and cobalt.
Local heritage and economic activities reflect a balance between long-standing traditions and modern industry. Huaibei has a winemaking tradition extending back more than a millennium, notably represented by the production of Kouzi wine. Additionally, the region functions as a major agricultural and fisheries hub within the National Agricultural Comprehensive Development Zones in the Huanghai and Huaihai regions. Farmland and aquatic sites produce staple crops like wheat, maize, cotton, broad beans, rice, and potatoes, alongside cultivated fisheries covering over 13,333 hectares that yield fish, shrimp, and crab.
Within the city, sports facilities include the Huaibei City Stadium, a venue capable of seating 30,000 spectators that predominantly hosts football matches. The urban landscape also incorporates specialized commercial and industrial areas, including the South Lake Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Tanxikouzi Economic and Technological Development Zone. Beyond these zones, the city maintains extensive industrial operations spanning textiles, power generation, chemical manufacturing, machinery, construction materials, and metallurgy.
Reaching and navigating Huaibei is supported by an established regional transportation framework. Six state and provincial highways pass directly through the municipality, while local railway lines link into major national rail routes connecting toward Beijing, Shanghai, Lianyungang, Urumqi, and Kowloon. For river navigation, Qinglongshan Port provides access leading to Hongze Lake and onward to the Yangtze River. Travelers utilizing air transit can access the city via Xuzhou Guanyin Airport, located approximately 50 kilometers away.
