Why Jixi
Jixi is a city situated in southeastern Heilongjiang Province, China, positioned near the southern edge of the Sanjiang Plain. Nestled where the Changbai and Wanda mountain ranges meet, the broader administrative domain shares a southeastern border with Russia's Primorsky Krai. The city lies approximately 30 kilometers from the international boundary and 120 kilometers from Lake Xingkai, which is the area's largest body of water. Key rivers traversing the region include the Muling, Songacha, and Ussuri rivers.
Historically inhabited by the Jurchen and Goguryeo peoples, the region initiated trade with China's Central Plain during the Shang dynasty and saw notable agricultural progress under the Han dynasty. Controlled by the Balhae Kingdom during the Tang dynasty, it later developed into a prime gathering zone for ginseng and medicinal plants under the Qing dynasty. In the early 20th century, continuous coal discovery transformed Jixi into one of China's key industrial energy bases. The surrounding region also contains significant historical landmarks from World War II, such as the border fortifications at Hutou Fortress.
The local cultural landscape is noticeably influenced by its Korean ethnic minority population. Regional culinary traditions heavily feature Jixi Cold Noodles, a fusion dish crafted from wheat or buckwheat that combines Korean and Northeastern Chinese flavors. These noodles are commonly served alongside ingredients such as dried bean curd, Pollack, and Campanulaceae. Other traditional foods enjoyed in the locality include fish-kettle and Korean-style dog meat.
Sightseeing options in urban Jixi include the Jixi Museum on the western side of the city and the nearby Huayan Temple situated across Wenhua Road. The Qi Lin Shan scenic area is located roughly an hour's drive away. Further east along the border district, travelers visit summer natural sites including Zhenbao Island—now designated as a Nature Reserve and National Forest Park—and the unpolluted waters of the Ussuri River Valley.
Jixi experiences a monsoon-influenced continental climate with bitter, dry winters and cool, refreshing summers tempered by the nearby Sea of Japan. Abundant sunshine reaches the city throughout the year, with July recording the highest temperatures. Visitors can reach the area via Jixi Xingkaihu Airport, located 30 minutes from the downtown core, offering domestic air services to destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Harbin, and Qingdao. The city is also connected through national expressways and rail routes, featuring the distinction of operating China's last remaining working steam locomotive.
