Why Liaoyang
Liaoyang is a prefecture-level city situated along the Taizi River in the east-central section of Liaoning province, China. Located roughly an hour south of the provincial capital of Shenyang by car, the city features higher education institutions such as Liaoning University's College of Foreign Studies alongside various vocational colleges. Visitors to Liaoyang can also attend professional basketball and volleyball matches held at a modern athletic facility.
As one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban locations in northeastern China, Liaoyang occupies a site that has remained unchanged since before the Warring States period. Historically known as Xiangping, it served as the political center of Liaodong Commandery under the Yan state as well as the Qin and Han dynasties. During the Three Kingdoms era, the city was the focus of Sima Yi's Liaodong campaign, and between the fifth and seventh centuries, it formed the northern boundary of the Goguryeo kingdom, where remnants of ancient sites like Yodong and Baegam remain visible near the modern city.
Liaoyang gained significant prominence during the Liao dynasty, an era marked by the construction of the White Pagoda in 1189, which later received additions during the Yuan dynasty. Under the Jurchen Jin dynasty, the settlement served as an eastern capital named Dongjing. In 1621, Emperor Nurhaci of the Later Jin dynasty established his capital here, placing family tombs nearby at Dongjingling. Modern visitors can view preserved sections of ancient city walls and explore a small museum situated inside the reconstructed south gate.
The city contains several notable historical and cultural destinations. Baita Park, located in the central Baita district, hosts the historic White Pagoda. Adjacent to the park stands Guangyou Temple, a sprawling complex originally established in 1145, rebuilt after being destroyed during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion, and now housing a massive sandalwood Buddha statue. Additional historical sights include the Liaoyang Museum, opened in 2009 to showcase historical antiques, as well as dedicated museums commemorating local historical figures such as Qing official Wang Erlie and Cao Xueqin, author of Dream of the Red Chamber.
Beyond historical monuments, the surrounding region offers varied recreational opportunities. To the east, Gongchangling County features a hot spring resort, a golf course, and a ski center. Outdoor activities in the area include exploring the Shenwo Reservoir Scenic Area, visiting the Tanghe River, and rafting along the Taizi River. Within the downtown district, visitors can browse five shopping malls and pedestrian streets offering regional street snacks, alongside dedicated dining streets known for Korean barbecue options.
