Why Beihai
Beihai is a prefecture-level coastal city situated in southern Guangxi, China, along the northern shore of the Gulf of Tonkin and directly west of the Leizhou Peninsula. Administratively divided into Haicheng, Yinhai, and Tieshangang districts alongside Hepu County, the municipality also encompasses the offshore islands of Weizhou and Xieyang. Historically serving as a vital maritime gateway for regional trade servicing inland territories such as Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan, the city maintains a commerce-driven economy supported by shipping and a major local shipyard.
Following the 1876 Sino-British Treaty of Yantai, Beihai developed into a significant international trade port. Eight Western nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States, constructed foreign consulates, hospitals, churches, schools, and maritime customs facilities. Today, fifteen of these historic European structures remain in the city. After undergoing various administrative transfers between Guangdong and Guangxi throughout the mid-twentieth century, Beihai was formally designated as an international tourist spot in 1982 and re-established as a prefecture-level city in 1983.
The region exhibits a rich linguistic and cultural heritage formed by historic migrations and coastal trade. Native Qin-Lian Yue languages like Limchownese are widely spoken across Hepu County and Yinhai District, whereas Pakhoi Cantonese forms the primary vernacular in central Haicheng District. Specific communities maintain distinct linguistic identities, such as the Tanka Cantonese speakers situated at Waishaqiao and the population of Qiaogang Town, which largely originated from Chinese-Vietnamese refugees during the 1975 anti-China protests in Vietnam. Additionally, the Ngai dialect of Hakka is spoken by nearly sixty percent of Weizhou Island's population, alongside minor Min dialects and the expanding use of Mandarin.
Beihai features a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate marked by mild to warm winters, extended hot summers, and high humidity year-round. The municipality receives roughly 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, with monthly average temperatures ranging from 14.6 °C in January to 29.0 °C in July. Extreme recorded temperatures span from 2.6 °C to 37.1 °C. The vast majority of precipitation occurs between June and September, which accounts for 70 percent of the yearly rainfall, while monthly precipitation drops to between 20 and 40 millimeters during the drier autumn and winter seasons.
Visitors can reach Beihai through multiple regional transportation channels. Air travel is facilitated by Beihai Fucheng Airport, which operates domestic flight connections. Ground transportation includes China National Highways 209 and 325, as well as passenger rail routes connecting the city to regional hubs like Nanning and Guilin, complemented by high-speed D-series train services.
