Why Diyarbakır
Diyarbakır is a major urban center situated in southeastern Turkey within the Southeastern Anatolia Region. Positioned on an elevated plateau alongside the Tigris River, it serves as the administrative capital of Diyarbakır Province. The city's primary urban core consists of four main districts: Sur, Yenişehir, Bağlar, and Kayapınar. Recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, the settlement traces its human history back to approximately 8,000 BCE.
Over the millennia, the region was governed by a long succession of empires and dynasties, including the Mitanni, Arameans, Assyrians, Urartu, Romans, Byzantines, Abbasids, Marwanids, Seljuks, Mongols, Safavids, and Ottomans. Historically referred to by ancient names such as Amida and Āmid, the city was also called Kara Âmid due to its dark basalt stone construction. In 1937, the modern name of Diyarbakır was formally adopted, referencing the abundance of copper in the surrounding area.
The historic heart of the city features the ancient Diyarbakır Fortress and extensive dark basalt city walls, which encircle the central Sur district. Although affected by major earthquakes in early 2023, these massive stone fortifications remain a defining historic landmark. Prominent architectural sites within the old quarters include the Great Mosque of Amida, constructed during the seventh century following the early Muslim conquests, and the ancient Church of the Virgin Mary, which serves as a cathedral for the Syriac Orthodox Church.
Throughout its history, Diyarbakır was a vital regional center home to diverse religious communities, monasteries, and churches. During the Ottoman era, the city gained a widespread reputation for its skilled artisans, particularly in glassmaking and metalworking. Local craftsmen created notable works exported to other regions, including gold- and silver-decorated doors for historic tombs in Konya and Baghdad. Today, the city remains an important metropolitan hub defined by its deep archaeological heritage.
