Why Shuozhou
Shuozhou is a prefecture-level city positioned in the northern part of Shanxi province, China, where it shares a northwest border with Inner Mongolia. Spanning approximately 10,662 square kilometers, the municipality lies along the upper reaches of the Fen River. In 2010, the region recorded a population of roughly 1.71 million people, with its central urban core and local administrative seat established in Shuocheng District.
Historically, the location originated as Mayi, an ancient Chinese frontier settlement that operated as a commercial trading post with Xiongnu nomads from the eastern Eurasian steppe. During the Han dynasty in 201 BC, Emperor Gaozu relocated Han Xin to Mayi, leading to conflict with the Xiongnu and Han Xin's eventual alliance with them prior to his death in 196 BC. The town later functioned as the capital of Dai Prefecture, served as the site of a 133 BC military ambush against the Xiongnu, and acted as an operational base for Liu Wuzhou during the transition between the Sui and Tang dynasties.
Although the city sees limited numbers of Western visitors, Shuozhou contains notable historical and cultural points of interest. Among its primary landmarks is the Yingxian Tower, constructed in 1056 throughout the Liao Dynasty entirely out of timber without the use of nails; today, it houses a museum dedicated to calligraphy. Beyond the tower, the area features paleolithic archaeological ruins as well as ancient burial sites associated with the Dongyi people. The city also hosts higher education institutions, including the Shanxi College of Technology and a campus of the North University of China.
The regional weather is categorized as a continental, monsoon-influenced semi-arid climate characterized by extended, dry, and cold winters alongside warm, moderately humid summers. The average monthly temperatures range from −9.8 °C in January to 21.9 °C in July, while over three-quarters of the annual 399 millimeters of precipitation falls between June and September. Economically, Shuozhou operates as an industrial center focused on the extraction of coal and ores like bauxite, iron, graphite, manganese, and mica, complemented by sectors in ceramics, agriculture, chemicals, and fishing.
Travelers reaching or navigating the prefecture can utilize various transportation links. The area is served by the Dayun Expressway, which connects Datong and Yuncheng, as well as five specialized railway lines. Regional air transit is provided by the Shuozhou Zirun Airport, which officially opened for service in December 2023.
