Why Shuangyashan
Shuangyashan is a prefecture-level municipality situated in the eastern part of Heilongjiang Province within the People's Republic of China. Positioned along the national border, the territory lies adjacent to Russia's Khabarovsk Krai and Primorsky Krai to the east. The city takes its name—which translates to a pair of duck mountains—from two mountain peaks located to the northeast of the urban area. Topographically, the municipality is encircled by a landscape of small surrounding mountains.
Although the region received its current name in 1384 during the Ming Dynasty, very few residents inhabited the area prior to the discovery of coal deposits in 1914. A major mining operation was established in 1928, leading to the territory being designated as a county in 1946. It was reclassified as a special mining district in 1954 before officially attaining city status in 1956. By the end of 2024, the municipality recorded a total registered population of over 1.33 million people, comprising more than 850,000 urban residents and nearly 486,000 rural inhabitants.
The city is rich in natural mineral resources, boasting 11 billion tons of verified coal reserves and over 120 million tons of magnetite reserves, both of which represent the highest totals in Heilongjiang Province. Alongside coal and magnetite, the area contains marble deposits and supports varied industrial manufacturing, including steel, timber, chemicals, construction materials, textiles, electrical machinery, and food production. The local service sector relies heavily on retailing, wholesaling, and tourism. Climatically, the municipality experiences a cold temperate monsoon climate characterized by long, chilly, and windy winters, maintaining an annual average temperature of roughly 4.46 degrees Celsius.
Outdoor recreational life in Shuangyashan centers around its surrounding mountainous terrain. A large public park established around one of the local mountains serves as a primary outdoor destination for the municipality. Covered in pine and elm trees, this elevated park provides space for winter activities and outdoor leisure throughout the season.
Transportation to the city is provided through rail, highway, and air connections. A high-speed rail station links the city via the Jiamusi–Mudanjiang high-speed line, enabling travel to Harbin in about three hours, Jiamusi in 25 minutes, and other destinations such as Dalian and Shijiazhuang. Conventional rail service operates via a spur link from Harbin, while a 57-kilometer freeway connects the town to Jiamusi, supported by modern coaches making the journey in approximately 45 minutes. Air travel is accessible via Jiamusi Airport, located 80 kilometers away, which offers flights to domestic hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, as well as Khabarovsk in Russia.
