Why Nouakchott

Situated along the Atlantic coast on the edge of the Sahara Desert, Nouakchott is the capital and economic heart of Mauritania. Positioned in the country's southwestern region, it stands as one of the largest urban centers in the desert zone. The city serves as the primary administrative base for the nation and hosts three-quarters of its service enterprises, major corporate banking headquarters, and key educational facilities such as the University of Nouakchott Al Aasriya.

Originally a small, fortified coastal fishing settlement, the site was selected in 1958 by Mauritania's first president to serve as a neutral, centrally located capital between Saint-Louis and Nouadhibou. Construction began the same year, and the new capital was established by the time independence was granted in late 1960. Designed initially for just 15,000 residents, the city experienced dramatic expansion during the 1970s as severe regional droughts prompted widespread migration from rural villages. By 2023, its population had grown to nearly 1.5 million residents.

The terrain of Nouakchott is mostly flat, with certain sections lying below sea level and eastern sand dunes posing an ongoing encroachment. The urban layout centers around Avenue Gamal Abdel Nasser, a major tree-lined boulevard running northeast that splits the city into northern residential districts and southern quarters. The metropolis is organized into three administrative regions encompassing nine departments, including Tevragh-Zeïna, Ksar, and Sebkha. Most structures across these neighborhoods are low-rise, single-story buildings.

Visitors to Nouakchott can explore several cultural institutions, including the National Museum of Mauritania, the National Library, and the National Archives. Prominent religious landmarks include the grand architectural sites of the Saudi Mosque and Masjid Ibn Abbas, as well as the Cathedral of Saint Joseph. The coastal shoreline features active beaches and the Port de Pêche, where a busy fish market offers fresh catches. Open-air commercial areas, such as the market in the Sebkha district and the Marocaine market, serve as major retail centers where local items, including native Saharan meteorites, are traded.

Travelers reach the city via Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport or major paved roadways, including the Route de l'Espoir and regional coastal highways. Maritime commerce is handled through a large deepwater facility known as Friendship Port. Nouakchott features a hot desert climate moderated somewhat by its coastal position. Average daily highs remain around 33 °C (91 °F), with September and October bringing the hottest conditions, while winter night temperatures regularly cool down to 13 °C (55 °F) or lower.
