Why Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre serves as the capital of Rio Grande do Sul and stands as the southernmost state capital in Brazil. Located along the eastern bank of Guaíba Lake, where five rivers meet to form the vast freshwater Lagoa dos Patos, the city acts as a major alluvial port alongside its role as a key commercial and industrial hub. Geographically, the area occupies a transitional zone between subtropical woodlands and the sweeping pampa grasslands characteristic of southern Brazil.

First inhabited by Azorean settlers in the mid-18th century, the municipality was officially established in the 1770s. Over the following century, the city grew into a diverse urban center, absorbing waves of German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Jewish, and Middle Eastern immigrants who joined the local indigenous and Afro-Brazilian populations. Porto Alegre is the focal point of regional gaúcho tradition, a culture historically tied to the 1835 Farrapos War and widely known for its churrasco barbecue and hot chimarrão tea.

Distinguished by its abundant vegetation, Porto Alegre allocates nearly a third of its urban territory to public parks, squares, and conservation zones. Over a million trees line the city streets, including species such as Jacaranda and Lapacho, with bottle trees prominently featured along Teresópolis Avenue. Major outdoor spaces include the historical Parque Farroupilha, the 43-hectare Botanical Garden, and the expansive Parque Marinha do Brasil, which houses numerous athletic fields. Wildlife and native flora are also protected in nearby natural reserves, such as the Jacuí Delta State Park and the Lami Biological Reserve.

The city features a humid subtropical climate with marked seasonal variations and precipitation spread evenly across the year. Summer months are hot and humid, frequently climbing above 30 °C, whereas winter temperatures typically range from 10 °C to 19 °C, occasionally bringing morning fog or light frost. Globally recognized for introducing participatory budgeting initiatives, Porto Alegre has also served as an international host for events such as the World Social Forum, the FISL tech gathering, and matches during the 1950 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
