Why Huangshan
Huangshan is a prefecture-level city situated in the southernmost region of Anhui Province, China. Named after the expansive Yellow Mountain range that covers a large portion of its territory, the municipality encompasses seven county-level divisions: the urban districts of Tunxi, Huangshan, and Huizhou, alongside the counties of She, Xiuning, Yi, and Qimen. The historical settlement of Tunxi forms the city's main urban core and remains widely known by that name among local residents.
The history of the area extends back to the era of the First Emperor, and its boundaries cover much of the historical Huizhou cultural region. As a major travel destination, Huangshan contains two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Mount Huangshan itself and the historic Southern Anhui villages of Hongcun and Xidi. The region also preserves local traditions such as the Ming dynasty opera Mulian Rescues His Mother, authored by Qimen native Zheng Zhizhen, which has been presented to visitors in recent years.
Geographically, Huangshan shares borders with Chizhou to the northwest, Xuancheng to the northeast, Jiangxi Province to the southwest, and Zhejiang Province to the southeast. At lower elevations, the region experiences a humid subtropical climate featuring short, cool winters and long, hot, humid summers. Annual precipitation is quite heavy, with rainfall heavily concentrated throughout the spring and early summer. In addition to tourism, the city is well known for its tea production, which includes Maofeng green tea and Keemun tea harvested in Qimen County.
While the region's rugged geography and narrow mountain routes historically rendered it secluded—with the Xinan River serving as a primary eastern passageway—modern infrastructure connects the city to wider transit routes. Air travelers utilize Huangshan Tunxi International Airport, which provides flights to domestic destinations as well as regional locations including Seoul, Hong Kong, and Taipei. High-speed train services operate through Huangshan North station, and multiple national expressways cross the region.
