Why Saitama

Saitama is the capital and largest city of Saitama Prefecture, located in Japan's Kanto Plain approximately 20 to 35 kilometers north of central Tokyo. Formed in 2001 through the merger of the former cities of Urawa, Omiya, and Yono, and later expanding to incorporate Iwatsuki in 2005, it serves as a major commercial center and residential district within the Greater Tokyo region. Uniquely among Japanese prefectural capitals, its official name is rendered exclusively in the hiragana phonetic script.

The city's landscape features lowlands and the north-south Omiya Plateau, situated mostly under 20 meters above sea level without any mountains or hills. Rivers such as the Arakawa, Moto-Arakawa, Shiba, and Ayase flow through the region. Saitama experiences a humid subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius. Summers are warm, peaking in August around 27.0 degrees, while cool winters average around 3.9 degrees in January with light to minimal snowfall. September is the rainiest month of the year.

Saitama is divided into distinctive hubs rooted in its constituent former towns. Omiya Ward serves as the main commercial and economic heart, having historically developed as a railroad hub. Urawa Ward functions as the administrative center and is recognized for its educational institutions, such as Saitama University, alongside upscale residential neighborhoods. Iwatsuki Ward is renowned for its traditional manufacturing of ornate samurai helmets known as kabuto and hinamatsuri dolls, while the Saitama New Urban Center area hosts relocated central government offices.

Visitors to Saitama can explore a diverse array of cultural and recreational sites. Key attractions include the Omiya Bonsai Village, the Railway Museum, the historic Hikawa Shrine, and the Saitama Museum of Modern Art. Outdoor spaces and historical points of interest include Akigase Park, Besshonuma Park, the Minuma Rice Paddies, and the Minuma Tsusen-bori canal. The city is also a major sporting destination, home to professional football clubs Urawa Red Diamonds and RB Omiya Ardija, as well as the Saitama Broncos basketball team. Major venues include Saitama Stadium 2002 and the Saitama Super Arena, and the city hosts the annual Saitama Criterium cycling event every late October.

As a vital transit junction for both passengers and freight, Saitama is highly accessible by rail. Omiya Station serves as the prefecture's central transit hub, providing connections to multiple Shinkansen high-speed lines, including the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku routes, alongside numerous regional commuter railways. The city is also linked by major expressways, while Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports are situated about two hours away.
