Why Yuyao City

Yuyao is a county-level city situated in the northeastern part of Zhejiang Province, China, under the administration of Ningbo. Covering an area of 1,527 square kilometers, the municipality lies 40 kilometers west of central Ningbo and 120 kilometers east of Hangzhou, with Hangzhou Bay marking its northern border. The local geography displays significant diversity, stretching from open ocean waters and fertile plain rice fields to the high peaks of the Siming Mountains in the south. The Yaojiang River originates within these southern mountains—a location recognized as the Ninth Fantasy World of Taoism—and flows through the territory on its path toward the East China Sea.

The region possesses a deep historical background, highlighted by the Neolithic Hemudu culture that emerged around 5000 B.C. Archaeological relics from this civilization reveal early large-scale rice cultivation, hurdle-style building designs, boat paddling, and spiritual traditions focused on birds and the sun. Throughout history, Yuyao earned recognition as a prominent literary state and produced notable Chinese scholars, including the influential ideologists Wang Yangming and Huang Zongxi. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the area also functioned as a key regional anti-Japanese base.

Yuyao features a humid subtropical monsoon climate marked by four distinct seasons and plentiful sunshine. The area receives roughly 2,061 hours of annual sunshine and an average annual rainfall of about 1,300 millimeters, though precipitation varies significantly year to year. Most rain concentrates during the East Asian rainy season between April and June, as well as the typhoon period spanning July through December. Annual temperatures average 16 degrees Celsius, reaching their lowest levels in January and February and peaking in July and August.

The city's economy relies on both agricultural output and industrial production. Local farms and fisheries supply tea, bamboo, silkworms, livestock, and fresh produce such as waxberries and mandarin oranges. Manufacturing enterprises primarily produce electrical appliances, textiles, machinery, and plastic products alongside emerging high-tech sectors. Yuyao is easily accessible via the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway, China National Highway 329, and the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway. The nearby Hangzhou Bay Bridge further connects the region across the bay.
