Why Xinyu
Xinyu is a prefecture-level city in the west-central portion of Jiangxi province, located roughly 135 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Nanchang. Covering a land area of more than 3,100 square kilometers, the terrain consists predominantly of low-lying plains, rolling hills, and river terraces, punctuated by surrounding mountain ranges and the Yuan River. The city has a four-season, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, bringing wet conditions and high temperatures during the summer months.
Inhabited since the Neolithic era, Xinyu has an urban history exceeding 1,700 years that dates back to the Three Kingdoms period. Historically linked to the ancient Yu River, the city's name evolved through numerous phonetic variations across successive imperial dynasties. The region is notable in folklore as the setting for classic Chinese legends, including the Eastern Jin tale of the Feathered Maiden and the story of Dong Yong and the Seventh Fairy. During the Ming dynasty, the renowned scientist Song Yingxing composed much of his landmark technological treatise, Tiangong Kaiwu, while serving as an official in local Fenyi County.
Natural attractions in the area center around Fairy Lake, also known as the Xiannühu Scenic District, which offers scenic waterside landscapes connected to local mythology. Mountainous sites include Mount Meng, which reaches an elevation of 1,004 meters, along with Baizhang Peak and Yangtian Gang. These peaks serve as national and provincial forest parks and feature a long spiritual history associated with Taoism and Buddhism, having historically drawn visits from notable scholars, poets, and figures such as Zhu Xi and Yue Fei.
Cultural traditions in Xinyu include Xiabu embroidery, a hand-woven ramie textile craft developed during the Northern Song dynasty that is used for decorative apparel and ceremonial attire. Visitors interested in twentieth-century history can also view revolutionary heritage locations within the area, including the sites of the Luofang Meeting and the Xingguo Investigation.
As a modern industrial city, Xinyu is recognized as a major center for steel production, lithium processing, and clean energy innovation. The destination is well connected by road and rail networks, including the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway and the Daqing-Guangzhou Expressway. High-speed passenger trains on the Shanghai-Kunming line stop at Xinyu North railway station, while conventional rail services connect through Xinyu station.
