Why Goyang
Goyang is a major city located in South Korea's Gyeonggi Province, operating as a satellite city within the broader Seoul Metropolitan Area. Covering an area of 286.1 square kilometers, it holds a population of just over one million residents. Bounded by the Han River to the west—opposite the city of Gimpo—and Bukhansan to the east, Goyang's administrative terrain is split into Deogyang District, which sits closest to Seoul, and the Ilsandong and Ilsanseo Districts, home to the planned city of Ilsan.
The area blends historic landmarks with modern facilities. Cultural attractions include the Bukhansanseong Fortress, Heungguksa Temple, the Haengju seowon Confucian Academy, and the traditional straw-roofed Ilsan Bamgasi Choga. Goyang also contains UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Seosamneung and Seooreung Royal Tombs. Educational institutions located within the city include Agricultural Cooperative College, Korea Aerospace University, and Transnational Law and Business University.
Visitors can explore a wide variety of entertainment and exhibition venues. Major sites include the KINTEX convention center, Hyundai Motor Studio Goyang, Hanhwa Aqua Planet aquarium, and Theme Zoo Park "Zoo Zoo". Specialized educational displays are available at the Aerospace Museum, the Cultural Center and Museum of Latin America, and the Baedari Korean Traditional Wine Museum. For arts, shopping, and media, the city features the Goyang Aram Nuri and Goyang Oulim Nuri Arts Centers, broadcasting centers for MBC and SBS, and retail centers like Starfield Goyang, IKEA Goyang, Lafesta, and Western Dorm.
Outdoor recreational options center on Jeongbal Mountain, Go Bong Mountain, Bukhansan, and Lake Park. The city hosts several recurring annual festivals. On New Year's Day morning, the Haengjusanseong Fortress Sun Rise Festival takes place at the mountain summit. On March 14, the Great Battle of Haengju Festival honors a historical victory at Chungjang Shrine. Emerging from a floricultural industry established in the early 1970s, the Goyang International Flower Festival is held around Lake Park each April. In October, the Goyang Lake Art Festival brings street performances, dance, jazz, installation art, and fireworks to the same area.
Goyang experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate featuring cold, dry winters alongside hot, rainy summers. The city is accessible through extensive transit options, including high-speed KTX rail services stopping at Haengsin station, GTX-A, Line 3, and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. Local transit incorporates the Tajo bike-sharing system, extensive bus networks with Bus Rapid Transit stops, and intercity bus facilities at the Goyang and Hwajeong terminals.
