Why Perm

Perm is a major Russian city and the administrative center of Perm Krai, located in the European section of Russia near the Ural Mountains. Situated on the banks of the Kama River, a chief tributary of the Volga, the city spans nearly 800 square kilometers and is home to over one million residents. As the 15th-largest city in Russia, Perm acts as a pivotal industrial, cultural, and educational regional hub.

The city’s geographical layout is defined by its position along the Kama River, extending approximately 70 kilometers parallel to the waterway and 40 kilometers across it. Situated on hilly terrain, the urban street grid follows a regular pattern adjusted to the local topography, running both along and perpendicular to the riverbank. Numerous small streams and rivers traverse the urban territory, including the Mulyanka, Yegoshikha, Motovilikha, and Gayva.

Originating as the village of Yagoshikha, the settlement saw significant growth in 1723 with the founding of a copper-smelting plant under Tsar Peter the Great and Vasily Tatishchev, earning city status and its current name in 1781. Positioned on the Siberian Route and Trans-Siberian Railway, it historically served as an important trading node and a site of exile for Polish insurgents and others, who contributed to local cultural life by establishing churches, a theatre, and a museum. Industrialization accelerated throughout the Soviet era, during which the municipality was briefly renamed Molotov between 1940 and 1957.

Today, Perm features diverse architectural, artistic, and historical attractions. Cultural venues include the Perm Opera and Ballet House, several dramatic theatres, and the Perm State Art Gallery, which displays regional wooden sculptures and classic artwork inside a former early 19th-century cathedral. Contemporary culture is highlighted at the Perm Museum of Contemporary Art. Public artwork throughout the city center includes notable street sculptures such as The Legend of Perm Bear and the Permyak Salty Ears.

As an educational and scientific center, the city hosts Perm State University alongside specialized academies dedicated to medicine, technical fields, arts, and agriculture. Travelers reach the area via Bolshoye Savino International Airport, situated 16 kilometers to the southwest, or through its two main railway stations on the Trans-Siberian network. Public transport within the city relies on trams, buses, and urban rail lines, while the navigable Kama River provides direct water routes connecting to several major seas.

Perm experiences a warm summer continental climate characterized by long, snowy, and cold winters alongside shorter, moderately warm summers. Because of its deep inland position, temperatures cool down rapidly in autumn, making late spring months noticeably warmer than early autumn months.
