Why Freetown

Freetown is the capital, largest city, and main urban, financial, educational, and cultural hub of Sierra Leone. Situated in the country's Western Area along the Atlantic Ocean, the city is defined by its location beside the Sierra Leone River estuary, which boasts one of the globe's largest natural deep-water harbours. The Lion Mountains sit to the southeast, framing the surrounding coastal landscape.

The land was inhabited for millennia by local populations, including the Bullom, Temne, and Loko peoples, prior to the arrival of transatlantic settlers. Freetown was formally established in March 1792 around a historic Cotton Tree by free and liberated African Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, and Liberated Africans. These settlers and their descendants became known as the Creole people. Today, the capital boasts a diverse population of various ethnic and religious backgrounds, with Krio serving as the primary language spoken across the city.

Administratively, Freetown is organized into three primary regions: the East End, Central Freetown, and the West End. Central Freetown houses the central business district as well as important national government institutions. On Tower Hill in the central district stand both the State House and the House of Parliament. The Brookfield neighborhood, also located near the core, features the National Stadium, which hosts major sporting events. To the east, the East End represents the city's largest population center and contains the commercial port facilities at Queen Elizabeth II Quay.

In contrast, the West End encompasses several affluent neighborhoods alongside coastal recreational spots. Visitors to this side of the city will find Lumley Beach, numerous luxury hotels, and local casinos. Further inland in the West End, the Hill Station neighborhood serves as the location for the official presidential residence, the State Lodge.

Freetown features a tropical monsoon climate with distinct wet and dry periods. The rainy season spans from May to November, beginning and ending with powerful thunderstorms, while the dry season covers the rest of the year. Between December and February, Harmattan winds blowing from the Sahara Desert bring lower humidity and the coolest temperatures of the year. Average annual temperatures sit at roughly 28 °C, with recorded extremes ranging between 15 °C and 38 °C.
