Why Seongnam

Seongnam is a major city situated in South Korea's Gyeonggi Province, ranking as the fourth largest city in the province and the tenth largest in the nation. Home to roughly one million residents, it has merged with the greater Seoul metropolitan network. The municipality is divided into three main administrative districts: Sujeong District, Jungwon District, and Bundang District.

As one of the earliest planned cities in South Korea, Seongnam was initially developed during the era of President Park Chung Hee to advance national industrialization. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the city focused on housing petrochemical, textile, and electronic manufacturing facilities, serving as a test bed for South Korean urban planning. Since 1991, the southern area of the city has included the Bundang new town project. Later commercial growth led to the establishment of Pangyo Techno Valley, which became Seongnam's primary industrial complex and core district, supplanting the older downtown sections of Jungwon and Sujeong.

Several major corporations have moved their corporate headquarters to Seongnam to help relieve crowding in central Seoul, including KT, Naver, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The city is also known for high educational standards and hosts higher learning institutions such as Gachon University and Dong Seoul University. Local specialized institutions include the Seongnam Foreign Language High School and Korea International School – Pangyo. Educational facilities across the city are complemented by one provincial library and eighteen municipal libraries.

Cultural and recreational sites are located throughout the municipality. The Seongnam Arts Center features an opera house, a concert hall, an ensemble theater, the main arts hall, the cube arts hall, an academy, musical fountains, and outdoor leisure facilities. Other notable points of interest include Namhansanseong, Bundang Central Park, the Pangyo Museum, and the Pangyo Eco Center. The city also hosts Seongnam FC, a professional football team competing in the K League 2.

Seongnam experiences a humid continental climate that borders on a humid subtropical climate. The area is highly accessible through various transit systems, including the Shinbundang Line, Suin–Bundang Line, Gyeonggang Line, Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 8, and Great Train eXpress Line A. Road networks connect the city to Seoul and neighboring municipalities via major expressways such as the Gyeongbu Expressway, Seoul Ring Expressway, and Yongin-Seoul Expressway, along with extensive red and green bus lines.
