Why Owerri
Owerri is the capital and largest city of Imo State, situated in the heart of Igboland in southeastern Nigeria. Spanning three local government areas—Owerri Municipal, Owerri North, and Owerri West—the city encompasses an area of approximately 551 square kilometers. It is bordered by the Otamiri River to the east and the Nworie River to the south. Known locally by the slogan Heartland, Owerri has earned a reputation for its active evening social scene, leading to the nickname Las Vegas of Africa due to its numerous hotels, casinos, and leisure parks.
Founded in the fourteenth century by Ekwem Oha, the city possesses a notable historical legacy. In 1969, Owerri served as the final capital of the disputed Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War, and memorial statuary remains in areas that suffered heavy bombing. Situated in a tropical rainforest zone, the surrounding territory produces agricultural commodities such as yams, cassava, taro, corn, rubber, and palm products. The region also sits above significant reserves of crude oil and natural gas. Local commerce is centered around major trade sites, including the Relief market.
The city is connected by several primary roadways, such as Port Harcourt Road, Aba Road, Onitsha Road, and Okigwe Road. Regional and domestic air transit is handled by Sam Mbakwe Airport, located 23 kilometers southeast of the city center in Obiangwu, which provides cargo services as well as flights to Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. Owerri experiences a tropical wet climate with an average temperature of 26.4 degrees Celsius. Precipitation occurs throughout most months, followed by a short dry season featuring a mild Harmattan influence. A key aspect of local culinary culture is Ofe Owerri, a traditional soup made with snails, goat meat, dried fish, smoked prawns, cocoyam, palm oil, and native green leaves.
Christianity is the predominant religion in Owerri, with large Roman Catholic and Anglican congregations. Prominent places of worship include Assumpta Cathedral, which is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, and the Anglican Cathedral Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. Additionally, All Saints Cathedral in Egbu stands as the historic location where the Bible was first translated into the Igbo language. In sports, Owerri is home to Heartland F.C., formerly known as Iwuanyawu Nationale or The Naze Millionaires, and is the hometown of internationally recognized football players such as Nwankwo Kanu and Kelechi Iheanacho.
