Why Abeokuta
Abeokuta, the capital city of Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria, sits along both banks of the Ogun River in a landscape of wooded savanna and large grey granite outcrops. The city spreads across fertile terrain that was historically enclosed by a 29-kilometer mud wall, portions of which remain today. It serves as a major hub for trade and industry, exporting products such as palm oil, cocoa, timber, natural rubber, cotton, kola nuts, and various agricultural staples.
The settlement was established around 1830 by Egba refugees who sought safety from civil strife and Dahomey slave raiders following the breakdown of the Oyo Empire. Gathering near the protective rock formations, the displaced population formed a loose federation of communities. Abeokuta successfully defended itself against Dahomey military attacks in 1851 and 1864. After establishing a formal alliance with the British in 1893, the territory was incorporated into colonial Nigeria in 1914 and eventually designated as the capital of Ogun State in 1976.
Among the city's primary attractions is Olumo Rock, an imposing granite site featuring natural caves and traditional shrines. Visitors are advised to display respectful behavior when exploring the rock due to its spiritual importance. Another key point of interest is the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, situated within the Green Legacy Resort grounds. The site operates chiefly as a museum dedicated to the public and personal life of the former military ruler and elected president.
Other notable landmarks include Ake, the traditional residence of the Alake, and the historic Centenary Hall, which was constructed in 1930. The city is also home to administrative and educational institutions, including the governor's office at Oke-Mosan, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and the Federal College of Education at Osiele. Industrial infrastructure includes granite quarries, processing plants, and the headquarters of the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority.
Transportation to and within Abeokuta is supported by major road links to cities such as Lagos and Ibadan, alongside an urban flyover completed in 2013. The city is served by both a legacy 1899 railway and a modern standard gauge rail line linking Lagos to Ibadan. Travel on the modern railway is serviced by a dedicated station building, with passenger tickets available exclusively through online booking.
