Why Kvaløya, Troms

Kvaløya, also known by its Northern Sami name Sállir and translated from Norwegian as "Whale Island," is an island located in Tromsø Municipality within Troms county, Norway. Covering 737 square kilometres (285 square miles), it is recognized as the fifth largest island in mainland Norway. The island supports a population of approximately 13,000 inhabitants, with the majority residing on its eastern side around Kvaløysletta, a suburban area positioned near the city of Tromsø.

The geography of Kvaløya is characterized by rugged terrain that includes at least ten mountains higher than 700 metres (2,300 feet) and three that exceed 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) in elevation. The tallest peak is Store Blåmann, reaching 1,044 metres (3,425 feet), which can be summited without technical climbing equipment despite a steep final section. Three distinct fjords—Kaldfjorden, Ersfjorden, and Kattfjorden—cut deep into the landmass, nearly dividing the island into two or three separate parts.

Along the southern edge, the Straumsfjorden strait separates Kvaløya from the mainland and features a tidal current named Rystraumen. Located 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the city near this channel, Straumhella is a local recreational site known for fishing. Positioned within Rystraumen is the island of Ryøya, where a small herd of musk oxen once inhabited a pine forest prior to 2013. Off the southwestern coast, the connected island of Sommarøy offers notable shore scenery and serves as a popular destination for outdoor leisure.

Kvaløya is connected to surrounding regions by several bridges and underground passages. It links to Tromsøya to the east via the Sandnessund Bridge, to Ringvassøya to the north by the sub-sea Kvalsund Tunnel, to the southern mainland through the Rya Tunnel, and to Sommarøy to the west across the Sommarøy Bridge. Facing the open ocean, the island's western coast is the warmest sector of Tromsø municipality. Weather records from Sommarøy show average daily temperatures of −1.9 °C (28.6 °F) in January and 11.9 °C (53.4 °F) in July, an overall annual average of 3.9 °C (39.0 °F), and yearly rainfall of 940 millimetres (37 inches).
