Why Ma Wan
Ma Wan is an island located in the Tsuen Wan District of Hong Kong, situated between Lantau Island and Tsing Yi Island. Spanning an area of 0.97 square kilometres, the island features Tai Leng Tau as its highest elevation at 69 metres in the southeast. It is bordered by the Ma Wan Channel to the east, Kap Shui Mun to the southwest, and the New Territories mainland to the north, while facing the small Tang Lung Chau islet to the south.
Archaeological discoveries indicate human presence extending back to the Mid-Neolithic Age, highlighted by burial tombs containing complete ancient human remains alongside historical relics from the Bronze Age, Han dynasty, Tang dynasty, and Qing dynasty. Cultural heritage features include a stone monument from a former Qing-era customs station known as the Kowloon Gate, as well as the historic Chan Study Hall, which was rebuilt in the early twentieth century into the Fong Yuen Study Hall. Geologically, the island is primarily formed of volcanic coarse ash crystal tuff from the Yim Tin Tsai Formation, complemented by fine-grained granite on the southeastern shore and various rock dykes crossing the land.
Modern transformation began in the mid-1990s alongside the construction of the Lantau Link infrastructure project. Today, a significant portion of Ma Wan is taken up by the Park Island apartment development, while traditional stilt-house settlements like Ma Wan Main Street Village have been vacated in favor of newly built residential sites. Prominent attractions include Ma Wan Park, which houses the Noah's Ark Museum and a Heritage Centre exhibiting ancient mud and brick kilns alongside skeleton replicas. Visitors can also spend time at Ma Wan Tung Wan Beach, explore two Tin Hau Temples, or learn about the local traditional output of shrimp paste.
Transportation to and from Ma Wan is provided via both road and maritime routes. The island connects to Tsing Yi across the Tsing Ma Bridge and to Lantau Island via the Kap Shui Mun Bridge. While private automobiles require a specialized permit to enter, public transportation is supplied by scheduled bus services running to nearby MTR stations and the airport, alongside urban taxis. Water transport is accommodated by the Park Island Ferry Pier, which maintains regular ferry connections to Central Pier 2 and Tsuen Wan Pier.
