Why Bac Mòr

Bac Mòr, frequently referred to in English as The Dutchman's Cap due to its unique silhouette, is a Scottish island forming part of the Treshnish Isles. The island's Gaelic name translates in part to "large," distinguishing it from its smaller neighbor, Bac Beag, while the term "Bac" can denote a bank, obstacle, or hindrance. Its distinctive profile makes it one of the most recognizable landforms among the Scottish islands.

Geologically, Bac Mòr features an ancient volcanic structure. A prominent central peak, which was once a volcanic cone, is encircled by a flat plain composed of a glassy lava field. Although the island lacks a safe place for boats to land, historical evidence such as the remains of summer sheilings indicates that people once inhabited the area.

Today, Bac Mòr and the surrounding Treshnish Isles are uninhabited and managed by the Hebridean Trust, a charitable organization. The island group is recognized for its natural significance, holding designations as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. These protections highlight the island's importance as a breeding site for seabirds, alongside its vibrant selection of wildflowers.
