Dubai has a reputation for luxury price tags, but some of its best experiences cost nothing — a spectacular fountain show, atmospheric old souks, palm-fringed beaches and glittering marina walks. Here are the free sights worth planning around.

The single best free show in the city is the Dubai Fountain at the foot of the Burj Khalifa: choreographed jets dancing to music every evening, watched for free from the promenade around the Dubai Mall (which is also free to wander, aquarium window and all). For a different Dubai entirely, explore Old Dubai & the Creek — wandering the gold and spice souks and the lanes of the historic Al Fahidi district costs nothing (only the one-dirham abra ferry is barely more than free).

For sun and sea, the public beaches of Palm Jumeirah give you soft sand, a swim and the skyline view without a resort bill, and an evening stroll along Dubai Marina — past the yachts, towers and waterfront — is one of the city’s great free pleasures, especially once the lights come on.

Beyond these four, free Dubai keeps giving: the beach parks and the Marina boardwalk, window-shopping the themed malls out of the heat, and simply watching the city glitter after dark. Time the outdoor sights for early morning or evening to beat the sun. Each guide below has the honest verdict and opening hours, so you can build a great Dubai day without spending a dirham.

To make the most of free Dubai, work with the climate and the clock: the Dubai Fountain performs every evening once the heat drops, the Marina and Palm beaches are glorious at sunset, and Old Dubai’s souks are liveliest and coolest in the morning. The Metro is a bargain way to cover the big distances between them, the malls offer free air-conditioned refuge in the fierce midday hours, and simply watching the city glitter after dark costs nothing at all.
