In Marrakech the real challenge is usually the midday sun, not rain — and the city’s palaces, madrasas and covered souks are the perfect places to retreat into the shade. When the heat peaks (or the rare shower falls), head for these sheltered sights.
Start with the Bahia Palace, a labyrinth of cool, tiled courtyards, shaded rooms and painted cedar ceilings where you can wander for an hour out of the sun — one of the most beautiful interiors in the city. Then step into the restored Ben Youssef Madrasa, once North Africa’s largest Islamic college, whose central courtyard and carved plaster and zellige are astonishing, and blessedly cool.
For life and shade together, dive into the Medina Souks: the maze of alleys is largely roofed with slatted cane and reed, throwing striped shade over the stalls and keeping the worst of the heat off as you browse lanterns, spices and leather. It is the classic way to spend the fierce middle of a Marrakech day — on your feet, in the shade, and free to wander.
Beyond these three, the city offers plenty of cool refuge: a riad courtyard for mint tea, a museum in a former palace, or a long shaded lunch until the sun softens. Save the open gardens and rooftop views for the gentler morning and evening hours. Each guide below has opening hours, ticket details and the honest verdict, so you can plan a comfortable Marrakech day out of the heat.
One planning note: the palaces and madrasa are at their coolest and calmest first thing in the morning, before the tour groups and the fiercest heat arrive, so start early and save the open gardens and rooftops for the gentler evening. The covered souks throw welcome shade even at midday, but they are also a maze — keep your bearings and your bag close. Dress modestly for the religious and historic sites, and duck into a riad courtyard for mint tea whenever you need to cool down.
