Why Alphen aan den Rijn

Alphen aan den Rijn is a city and municipality located in the province of South Holland in the western Netherlands. Situated along the banks of the Oude Rijn river at the point where the Gouwe river diverges, it forms part of the Green Heart region, a less densely built area within the Randstad. In addition to the main city, the municipality encompasses several surrounding communities, including Aarlanderveen, Benthuizen, Boskoop, Koudekerk aan den Rijn, Zwammerdam, and the settlements of Hazerswoude-Dorp and Hazerswoude-Rijndijk.

Settled for two millennia, the area originally served as a northern frontier post for the Roman Empire along the main branch of the Rhine. Roman garrisons were established in the region, including the fort of Albaniana beneath the current city center, from which the name Alphen likely originates. The town re-emerged as a commercial hub in the seventeenth century, utilizing the river for boat traffic and trade. The modern municipality expanded through several mergers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, developing into a major commuter community while undergoing extensive urban renewal projects that modernized its riverfront areas with pedestrian streets, new public spaces, and a performing arts venue.

Visitors to Alphen aan den Rijn can explore several distinct recreational and cultural sites. The Avifauna Bird Park, opened in 1950, was the world's first park dedicated exclusively to birds. Nearby, the Archeon archaeological park offers insight into Dutch history through historical reenactments and 43 reconstructed buildings spanning the prehistoric, Roman, and medieval eras. For outdoor recreation, the Zegersloot Recreation Park features an artificial lake surrounded by space for walking, cycling, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and water skiing.

Throughout the year, the city hosts a variety of public gatherings and sporting events. Notable annual occasions include the 20 van Alphen, an international twenty-kilometer running race held every March, and the LAURA four-day cycling event in July, which begins and ends in the city. The Archeon park hosts fantasy-themed Midwinter and Midzomer Fairs, while August features the Lakeside Festival music event near Zegersloot and the Vakantiespel program for children. Autumn brings a regional products market alongside an Old Timer Day celebrating vintage automobiles, tractors, and steam engines.

The city is served by public transportation through the Alphen aan den Rijn railway station, positioned just southeast of the town center, with an adjacent bus station providing local and regional bus connections.
