Why Yacuiba

Yacuiba is a rapidly expanding border city located in southern Bolivia. Serving as the capital of the Gran Chaco Province within the Tarija Department, it sits at an elevation ranging between 620 and 680 meters above sea level. The municipality's name originates from the Guaraní term "yaku-iba," which translates approximately to "fowls' watering hole." In modern times, the city has experienced significant population growth, reaching roughly 97,000 residents, driven largely by commercial trade and a thriving hydrocarbon industry.

Positioned just three kilometers from the international boundary with Argentina, Yacuiba operates as a major commercial center. It shares a continuous urban area with the neighboring Argentine town of Salvador Mazza across the border. Historically, the area was governed as part of Argentina's Salta Province until it was officially ceded to Bolivia in the year 1900.

Beyond its commercial activities, Yacuiba is notable for its sports presence. Despite its modest size, the city has been represented in Bolivia's top-tier professional football league by the local team, Club Petrolero.

Travelers can reach Yacuiba via direct highway routes connecting the city to Tarija and Santa Cruz. The city is also served by its own international airport, bearing the airport code BYC. Regional weather is categorized as a dry-winter humid subtropical climate. Thanks to its modest elevation and local monsoonal influences, Yacuiba experiences slightly cooler temperatures than the surrounding lower-lying areas.
