Why Colcapirhua
Colcapirhua is a town located in the Cochabamba Department of central Bolivia. Serving as the administrative center of the Colcapirhua Municipality, it forms the fifth municipal section within the Quillacollo Province. The town's name originates from Quechua terms referencing storage places, particularly those historically used for holding corn.
Geographically, Colcapirhua is situated between several neighboring areas. It shares its eastern border with Cercado Province, while the town of Quillacollo lies to its west. The municipality of Tiquipaya borders Colcapirhua to the north.
Historically, the local population was renowned for crafting clay and mud pottery, including jars, pots, and vases. This traditional artisan skill earned the local potters the Quechua designation of Mank'a llutas. The area officially gained municipal status on April 15, 1985, under Law 579 during the presidency of Hernán Siles Suazo, following a 27-year effort driven by local residents seeking better representation. This creation was later reaffirmed in 1987 under President Víctor Paz Estenssoro, establishing it as the youngest municipality in Quillacollo Province.
Cultural life in Colcapirhua features several public fairs that highlight the region's agricultural goods and traditions. In mid-February, the Plaza 15 de Abril hosts a corn and Jak'a Lawa fair, celebrating a traditional local soup that has been recognized as regional culinary heritage. In April, the town holds a festival dedicated to miniature food, presenting traditional dishes prepared in small portions. Later in the year, an October event showcases regional plants alongside local handicrafts.
