Why Cobija

Cobija is a city located in northwestern Bolivia within the Amazon Basin, serving as the departmental capital of Pando. Situated approximately 600 kilometers north of La Paz, the city sits on a pronounced curve of the Acre River directly along the international border with Brazil, opposite the Brazilian city of Brasiléia. It rests at an elevation of roughly 280 meters above sea level and maintains a tropical monsoon climate characterized by high temperatures throughout the year, featuring a marked dry period alongside a humid wet season marked by strong thunderstorms.

Originally established in 1906 under the name Bahía by Colonel Enrique Cornejo, the settlement was renamed Cobija in 1908 to honor Bolivia's former Pacific coastal port lost to Chile during the War of the Pacific. In the early twentieth century, the town prospered as a hub for the rubber industry. Following the decline of this trade, the local economy suffered and the population diminished. Today, the area is experiencing renewed growth, with Bolivia nuts forming the primary local industry alongside expanding commerce and tourism. The city also hosts the country's largest free economic zone.

Cobija functions as an administrative and educational center, housing a university and a Brazilian consulate. The local population has grown significantly over recent decades, with current estimates reaching up to 80,000 residents amid high annual growth rates. Sports facilities in the city include the Estadio Roberto Jordán Cuellar, a stadium capable of accommodating 24,000 spectators.

Transportation infrastructure links Cobija regionally and internationally. The city is joined to neighboring Brazil via two bridges across the Acre River and lies along the route of the Interoceanic Highway. Air travel is supported by Captain Aníbal Arab Airport, which is serviced by major domestic airlines. Over land, bus connections run to Riberalta, and a road connects the city to El Choro in the department of Beni, though highway links to the rest of Bolivia can become impassable during periods of heavy rain.
