Why Taunsa Sharif
Taunsa Sharif, also spelled Tonsa, is a city situated in the Punjab province of Pakistan, serving as the administrative capital of Taunsa District. Situated along the banks of the Indus River, the city is widely recognized for its agricultural and irrigation importance. Demographically, the population was recorded at 115,704 in the 2023 census, with Saraiki speakers forming the primary linguistic group alongside a notable Balochi-speaking minority. The name of the city is locally believed to originate from a word translating to thirst, reflecting historical water scarcity in the area.
Geographically, Taunsa is framed by the Koh-e-Sulaiman mountain range. The city is positioned along the Indus Highway, also known as the Karachi-Peshawar Highway, making it accessible from major regional urban centers. It lies roughly 120 kilometers from Multan, 430 kilometers from Peshawar, 450 kilometers from Lahore, and 975 kilometers from Karachi.
A central feature of the area's infrastructure and geography is the Taunsa Barrage, positioned a few kilometers south of the city proper on the Indus River. Constructed in 1958, this major headworks structure supplies vital irrigation water across two million acres of farmland via the Muzaffargarh and Dera Ghazi Khan Tehsil canals, as well as the Taunsa-Panjnad Link Canal. The barrage also supports local drinking water supplies in rural southern Punjab and sustains a diverse fish population that serves as a regional food source.
In addition to its role in regional agriculture, the barrage site holds ecological significance, having been officially designated as a protected Ramsar wetland on March 22, 1996. Due to structural aging and soil erosion over time, the infrastructure underwent a major rehabilitation project funded by a $123 million World Bank loan approved in 2003 to safeguard the local economy and water supply.
