Why Dijkot

Dijkot is a city situated in the Faisalabad District of the Punjab province in Pakistan. Historically recognized as the State of Dijkot, the area covers a physical footprint of 700 kanal, which corresponds to 0.35 square kilometers. Based on demographic figures from 2023, the city is home to a population of 96,934 residents. In terms of regional geography, Dijkot is located along the Faisalabad-Samundri Road, lying at a distance of 26 kilometers from Faisalabad and 20 kilometers from Samundri.

The name Dijkot is connected to a historical warrior tribe. Etymologically, the designation is derived from the word ditch, which translates roughly to a fort or a town established inside a fort. Throughout its long history, the settlement experienced multiple periods of destruction followed by efforts at restoration and repopulation across different eras.

The earliest documented conflict in the area occurred in 326 BC, when the army of Alexander the Great attacked Dijkot. This offensive resulted in the destruction of the city and caused a severe reduction in its overall population. Following this period of decline, the town was eventually re-settled and came under the rule of Chandragupta Maurya, who restored a degree of historical importance to the locality.

In 712 AD, the region faced further conflict during the campaigns of Muhammad ibn al-Qasim. After attacking and occupying the Sindh region in southeast Pakistan, his forces advanced toward the Punjab city of Chiniot, devastating Dijkot along the way. Later in 1460, attacks launched by local tribes caused the destruction of Dijkot once again. Rebuilding efforts took place in 1462, led by Baba Sher Shah, a Sufi saint who resided to the south of the state.

Administrative infrastructure developed further during the period of the British Empire in India. In 1908, a local police station was established in Dijkot, accompanied by the founding of a government high school. In modern times, the city contains public facilities such as the Civil Hospital, alongside educational institutions including primary schools, higher secondary schools for both male and female students, the Government College for Boys, and the Government Post Graduate College for Women.
