Why Nikaia
Nikaia, formerly called Kokkinia until 1940, is a town and suburban municipal unit situated in southwestern Greece. Covering an area of roughly 6.6 square kilometers, it forms part of the Piraeus regional unit within the greater Athens urban area and acts as the seat for the municipality of Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Rentis.
Positioned 2.5 kilometers north of Piraeus and 7 kilometers west of the center of Athens, the town's primary roadways include Petrou Ralli Street and Gregori Lambraki Street. The local environment is characterized by a hot semi-arid climate, featuring mild winters paired with hot summers.
The modern population of Nikaia grew significantly due to the influx of Greek refugees displaced from Asia Minor following the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 to 1922. Originally administered under Piraeus, the area established itself as an independent municipality in 1933 under the name Nea Kokkinia before taking its current name in 1940. A notable event in its history occurred on August 17, 1944, when the Executions of Kokkinia took place during the German occupation of Greece. The town has also hosted international competitive events, including a major chess tournament in 2000 and the Greek Weightlifting Grand Prix in late 2003.
Visitors to Nikaia can explore several local landmarks and cultural venues. Among its key sights are the Klimakia Gallery and the open-air Katrakeio Theater, which was dedicated to Manos Katrakis. The town also contains notable sports facilities, such as the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall—built for weightlifting events during the 2004 Summer Olympics—alongside the Platon National Sports Centre, the Nikaia Municipal Gymnasium, and Neapoli Stadium.
Athletic culture plays a prominent role in the town, which is home to four historic sports clubs: Proodeftiki, Ionikos Nikaias (featuring recognized football and basketball departments), A.E. Nikaias, and Aris Nikaias. Transit to and around Nikaia is facilitated by public OSY bus routes as well as the Nikaia metro station on Line 3.
