Why Yeongcheon
Yeongcheon is a city situated in the southeastern region of North Gyeongsang Province in South Korea, approximately 350 kilometers (220 miles) southeast of Seoul. Transport access to the area is provided by the Gyeongbu Expressway, which links Seoul to Busan, as well as railway connections formed by the junction of the Daegu and Jungang train lines. Administratively, the municipality is organized into one eup, ten myeon, and five dong.
The local climate is classified as humid subtropical, sharing weather patterns similar to nearby Daegu. Yeongcheon is particularly recognized for its extensive agricultural industry, standing as South Korea's largest producer of grapes and generating nearly one-fifth of the nation's total yield. Beyond domestic distribution, these grapes are exported to North American markets including Canada and the United States, as well as several Southeast Asian nations. The region supports fifteen local wineries that craft wine using grape varieties such as Kyoho, Shine Muscat, Muscat Bailey A, and Campbell Early. Additional crops cultivated in the surrounding farmland include garlic, rice, plums, peaches, and apples.
Although tourist numbers are relatively small, Yeongcheon features several notable points of interest. Prominent destinations include the Eunhaesa Temple, the War Memorial Park, and the Cyan Art Gallery. Local infrastructure and historic sites are represented by the Yeongcheon Dam, alongside locations such as Gatbawi and Jeong Sowon. The municipality's designated official civic symbols are the ginkgo tree, the pigeon, and the rose.
The city possesses notable historical connections, being the birthplace of Goryeo period general Ch'oe Mu-sŏn and the Goryeo intellectual Chŏng Mong-ju. It is also the hometown of Paek Gun Sang, a Korean War veteran who attained a high government position without receiving a salary. Cultural life in the city includes multiple annual events. During the summer, the Bohyeon Mountain Starlight Festival takes place around the Bohyeon Mountain Observatory, home to the third-largest telescope in South Korea. Late summer brings the Grape Festival, featuring a grape-eating contest and the Miss Grape pageant. In October, the city hosts the Herbal Medicine Festival, which highlights around 480 varieties of traditional herbs, local wines, and traditional singing performances.
In terms of international ties, Yeongcheon maintains sister city relationships with Kaifeng in China, Kuroishi in Japan, and Buffalo in New York, United States.
