Why Mtwara
Mtwara is the capital city of the Mtwara Region, situated along the Indian Ocean in southeastern Tanzania. Positioned near the equator, the city experiences a tropical wet and dry climate defined by hot, humid conditions throughout most of the year. Annual rainfall averages approximately 1,024 millimeters (40 inches), with a wet season running from November through April or May, followed by a dry season that lasts until late October.
Constructed in the 1940s, Mtwara was planned as the primary export location for the Tanganyika groundnut scheme. Following the collapse and abandonment of the project in 1951, the urban area was largely neglected for years. Built on a spacious layout designed to support up to 200,000 residents, Mtwara currently has a population of around 141,000. The initial development phase endowed the town with substantial municipal architecture, including a prominent post office, and established its foundational infrastructure.
The city contains Tanzania's third-largest ocean port, featuring a deep-water harbor capable of berthing large container ships and ocean-going vessels. Following government-funded upgrades, the port serves an Export Processing Zone and acts as a transit node for fuel shipments to neighboring countries like Malawi and Zambia. The port facility also handles cargo for regional gas exploration, coal transport, and major industrial facilities, including a local Dangote Cement branch and the Chinese-owned Lulu Cement plant in nearby Mikindani. A supplemental port dedicated to heavy materials such as cement and coal is under construction at Mgao Village, while long-term development plans involve building railway lines to interior mining zones to facilitate exports of iron ore, coal, gas, and cashew nuts.
Mtwara acts as an regional transit point and a gateway to the emerging tourism destination of Mikindani. Paved road networks link the city north to Lindi and Dar es Salaam, west to Masasi, and farther inland along the A19 highway to Mbamba Bay on Lake Malawi, as well as south into Mozambique via the Unity Bridge. Daily express buses connect Mtwara with Dar es Salaam and Masasi. The town is also served by Mtwara Airport, which features a modernized paved runway capable of accommodating medium-sized passenger jets for one-hour daily flights to and from Dar es Salaam. In local sports and international culture, Mtwara is the home base for Bandari F.C. and Ndanda F.C., and is twinned with Redditch in the United Kingdom.
