Why Piranshahr

Piranshahr is a city located in West Azerbaijan province in Iran, functioning as the administrative capital of both Piranshahr County and its Central District. Also known historically by names such as Pîranşar or Khane, the settlement has grown into a notable population center within the region. Census data traces its growth from 57,692 residents across 12,184 households in 2006 to 91,515 people across 23,468 households in 2016, giving it the highest average annual population growth rate in West Azerbaijan province.

The origins of the city's name are deeply tied to classical Iranian literary traditions. According to the Arab geographer Yaqut al-Hamawi, the name comes from Piran, a key figure in the Shahnameh, the national epic of Greater Iran. Piran is described in historical and literary sources—including writings by Tabari and Tha'ālibī—as the king of Khotan and a military commander for King Afrasiab of Turan. Regarded in Persian culture as an emblem of wisdom and diplomacy, Piran features in classical narratives like the tales of Siavash, Kay Khosro, and Bizhan and Manizhe. Additionally, scholar Djalal Khaleghi Motlagh suggested a connection between Piran and the Median figure Harpagus.

The surrounding area shares links with ancient history. Nearby Pasveh, located in the Lajan District of Piranshahr County, is associated with the ancient Parsua civilization. Iranist Vladimir Minorsky noted that the name Pasveh traces back to Parsua tribes who established themselves there by the ninth century BC. Historical references to this settlement also appear in Assyrian records from the reign of King Shalmaneser III, who ruled from 858 to 824 BC.

In terms of environment and local infrastructure, Piranshahr is categorized under the Köppen system as having a humid continental climate. The city is administered by a mayor chosen by a municipal council that is periodically elected by local citizens. Higher education and specialized training in the city are provided through Payame Noor University, Islamic Azad University, and several local conservatories and art institutions.
