Why San Leandro

San Leandro is a city situated in Alameda County, California, along the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. It lies southeast of Oakland and northwest of Ashland, Castro Valley, and Hayward, with the San Leandro Hills rising to the northeast. Below the city's terrain flow underground aquifers, with groundwater generally moving westward toward San Francisco Bay.

The region was historically inhabited by indigenous people referred to by Spanish settlers as Costeños. European visitors first arrived in 1772, led by Captain Pedro Fages and Father Crespi. The area later comprised two Mexican land grants, Rancho San Antonio and Rancho San Leandro, positioned along El Camino Viejo. In 1842, José Joaquín Estudillo received the Rancho San Leandro grant, and his family laid out the initial townsite in 1855, bounded by San Leandro Creek to the north. San Leandro served as the seat of Alameda County from 1856 until an 1868 earthquake destroyed its courthouse. A significant Portuguese American community began settling in the late 19th century to establish farms and businesses.

Historically recognized for its traditional industrial roots and food-processing operations, San Leandro has hosted major corporate presences including Ghirardelli, OSIsoft, the 21st Amendment Brewery, a Coca-Cola facility, and a former Maxwell House coffee roasting plant. Commercial destinations encompass Pelton Plaza and several shopping centers, including Bayfair Center, Westgate Center, Greenhouse Shopping Center, and Marina Square Center. The city is also home to Lit San Leandro, a high-speed fiber-optic network serving commercial users, as well as the Zero Net Energy Center, a specialized electrician training facility built for zero-energy performance.

Visitors to San Leandro can explore the shoreline and recreational facilities across the city. The San Leandro Marina and Shoreline Recreation Area feature trails, picnic spots, and boat docks. Additional local resources include sixteen city parks, the Marina Community Center, the San Leandro Senior Community Center, and the San Leandro Family Aquatic Center. Nearby destinations include Lake Chabot Regional Park, offering hiking, camping, and fishing, as well as the Fairmont Ridge Staging Area, which houses the Children's Memorial Grove.

San Leandro is easily accessible via Interstates 880, 580, and 238, alongside key local thoroughfares such as East 14th Street and Davis Street. Regional public transit is provided by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) via the San Leandro and Bayfair stations, complemented by AC Transit buses, the local San Leandro LINKS shuttle service, the Flex Shuttle for seniors, and East Bay Paratransit.
