Why Lawrence
Lawrence is a city situated on the northeast side of Indianapolis within Marion County, Indiana. Covering an area of just over 20 square miles, the community shares its eastern border with Hancock County and the town of McCordsville, while sitting roughly nine miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis. Natural features touch the landscape in the northwest, where Fall Creek flows southwest toward the White River and forms part of the municipal boundary.
The municipality was originally platted in 1849 under the name Lanesville, but was later called Jamestown before county commissioners settled on the name Lawrence in 1866. The current name honors Captain James Lawrence, a naval commander from the War of 1812. In 1929, local voters elected to form an independent town government and establish municipal services. Following the consolidation of Marion County and Indianapolis under the Unigov framework in 1969, Lawrence maintained its separate municipal government as one of four excluded cities, allowing residents to participate in both local and countywide elections.
The northwestern portion of Lawrence is home to Fort Harrison State Park, which preserves the grounds of the historic military post, Fort Benjamin Harrison. The state park and Fall Creek area provide prominent open spaces and outdoor environments within the urbanized landscape. In addition to its outdoor areas, the city features civic facilities such as a branch of the Indianapolis Public Library and a local campus of Ivy Tech Community College, which is affiliated with the main campus in downtown Indianapolis.
Transportation through Lawrence centers around major highways, including U.S. Route 36, also known as Pendleton Pike, which cuts through the city toward Pendleton to the northeast. Interstates also serve the area, with Interstate 465 meeting U.S. Route 36 at Exit 42, and Exit 40 providing access near East 56th Street along the western edge. Visitors experience a humid continental climate characterized by hot, humid summers and winters that range from mild to cold, with rainfall and precipitation distributed regularly across every season.
