Why Cedar Hill
Cedar Hill is a suburban city located in North Texas, situated about 16 miles southwest of downtown Dallas. While the majority of the municipality rests within Dallas County, a small southern section extends into Ellis County. Positioned along the eastern shore of Joe Pool Lake, Cedar Hill sits at an elevation of roughly 800 feet above sea level, making it the highest point on a straight line between the Red River border and the Gulf Coast. Surrounded by adjacent communities such as Grand Prairie, Duncanville, DeSoto, and Midlothian, the area is sometimes called the "hill country of Dallas" due to its abundant native eastern red cedar evergreen trees and limestone escarpments.
First settled around 1846 by families arriving from the Peters Colony, the community grew into the region's largest early settlement and served as a stop along a branch of the Chisholm Trail. Cedar Hill briefly served as the temporary seat of Dallas County until a destructive tornado struck on April 29, 1856. The storm killed at least nine residents and left only two buildings standing, leading officials to relocate the county seat to Dallas. Land donated by a survivor was later certified as the Crawford Tornado Graveyard. Decades later, in October 1932, the local bank was robbed twice in quick succession by Raymond Hamilton, an associate of Bonnie and Clyde. The original bank building still stands in the downtown district and features an official historical medallion.
Visitors to Cedar Hill can explore several distinct commercial and mixed-use districts. The city's planned City Center connects three sub-districts—Uptown, Midtown, and Historic Downtown—into walkable areas featuring housing, dining, and outdoor recreation. Major commercial hubs include The Plaza at Cedar Hill, Pleasant Run Towne Crossing, and Hillside Village. Designed as an open-air lifestyle center, Hillside Village offers retail stores, restaurants, a promenade with a bocce court, a covered stage, and a children's play region.
Outdoors, Cedar Hill has dedicated 20 percent of its total land area to public parks and green space. The city encompasses 3,000 acres of nature reserves, anchored by Dogwood Canyon and Cedar Hill State Park. Dogwood Canyon provides trails through flowering dogwood trees and rare orchids, offering habitat for coyotes, bobcats, and bird species like the painted bunting. Nearby, Cedar Hill State Park covers 1,826 acres along Joe Pool Lake, preserving rare remnants of native tallgrass prairie. The 6,469-acre lake provides opportunities for fishing largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish, while local sports complexes feature 21 baseball and softball fields, 18 soccer pitches, and a 36-hole disc golf course.
