Rancho Santa Margarita is a master-planned community situated in Orange County, California. Set upon an elevated plateau known as Plano Trabuco, the city spans approximately 13 square miles, bounded by Mission Viejo to the west, Trabuco Canyon to the north, Coto de Caza and Las Flores to the south, and the Cleveland National Forest along its eastern edge. It ranks among the youngest incorporated cities in the county and holds the distinction of having the longest official city name in the state of California.
The area possesses a rich regional history, originating as the ancestral homeland of the Acjachemen people, whose historical village of Alume was situated between Trabuco Creek and Tijeras Creek. In 1810, the Trabuco Adobe was built nearby as an outpost for Mission San Juan Capistrano. While the city draws its name from a historical rancho located in San Diego County, its physical footprint lies within the historic boundaries of Rancho Mission Viejo. The official city seal highlights this heritage, depicting Santiago Peak rising in the background alongside the distinctive Rancho Santa Margarita Lake Tower.
Visitors and residents experience a Mediterranean climate typical of southern California. The city's transport network relies on major thoroughfares including Santa Margarita Parkway, Antonio Parkway, and Alicia Parkway, as well as vehicular connections via California State Route 241, a regional toll road. The community's landscape is almost entirely terrestrial, punctuated by small water features including its local lake.
Rancho Santa Margarita is made up of distinct residential neighborhoods, such as Robinson Ranch, Rancho Cielo, and Dove Canyon. The city supports an educational network comprising numerous public elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, including Santa Margarita Catholic High School.
