Why Roseville

Roseville is a city situated in Macomb County, Michigan, located approximately 13 to 14 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. Covering an area of nearly 10 square miles, this fully urban municipality functions as a northern suburb of the Detroit metropolitan area. It shares borders with St. Clair Shores to the east, Eastpointe to the south, Warren to the west, and Fraser and Clinton Township to the north, with the county seat of Mount Clemens positioned seven miles to the northeast.

The history of the community traces back to 1840, when William Rose established a permanent post office named in honor of his father, Dennison Rose, a War of 1812 veteran. The village officially incorporated in 1926 and constructed its municipal building three years later at Gratiot Avenue and Meier Road, replacing an older township facility. Roseville was also the site of Michigan's initial commercial airfield, Packard Field, which opened in 1919 and was later known as Gratiot Airport and Hartung Field before being redeveloped into the Eastgate Shopping Center during the 1950s. The village and remaining portions of Erin Township merged to incorporate as the City of Roseville in 1958.

Commercial and civic developments have long served as focal points for the community. The local public library system originated in 1936 within the municipal building before expanding into a dedicated facility and eventually joining a new civic center complex in 1974. Retail activity has been anchored by the Macomb Mall, an early regional shopping center located west of Gratiot Avenue and Masonic Boulevard that has operated continuously since opening in 1964.

Transportation throughout Roseville relies on a structured network of major freeways, state routes, and grid roads. Interstate 94 runs along the city's eastern boundary, while Interstate 696 cuts directly east-west through the center of the municipality. State highways M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) and M-97 (Groesbeck Highway) provide key diagonal connections linking Detroit to northern Macomb County. Additionally, local travel is facilitated by a system of east-west mile roads stretching from 10 Mile Road on the southern border to 14 Mile Road on the north, alongside Utica Road, which crosses the area diagonally from southeast to northwest.
