Why Burleson
Burleson is a growing community in the United States, situated primarily within northern Johnson County with a small section extending into Tarrant County, Texas. Positioned within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, the city acts as a regional hub conveniently located along Interstate 35W, approximately 15 miles south of downtown Fort Worth. The landscape rests mostly between 700 and 800 feet above sea level, covering just over 26 square miles of land traversed by Village Creek, a tributary of the Trinity River.
The town was established in October 1880 when Grenville M. Dodge acquired land for a depot along the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad from Reverend Henry C. Renfro. Renfro named the settlement after Rufus Columbus Burleson, the president of Baylor University. Incorporated in 1912, the community initially grew around agriculture, grist mills, and cotton gins. A electric interurban railway line built in 1912 connected Burleson to surrounding towns, bringing municipal electricity and regional transit until the line closed in 1931. The community experienced significant expansion following the construction of Interstate 35 through the area in 1960.
Visitors to Burleson can explore the city's historic core, known as "Old Town," which marks the original center laid out during the railroad era. The Burleson Visitor Center houses the Burleson Heritage Museum inside a restored historic drugstore that once served as the interurban transit station. Displayed on site are two preserved interurban railcars from the early twentieth century. Additionally, the municipal area features accessible regional transport facilities, including Fort Worth Spinks Airport along the city's northern boundary.
Burleson experiences a humid subtropical climate defined by hot, humid summer months and generally cool to mild winters. High temperatures in July and August typically average around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter daytime highs in December and January average roughly 56 degrees Fahrenheit. The area receives about 37 inches of rainfall annually. Burleson can be reached via Interstate 35W or Texas State Highway 174, which connects the municipality directly to Cleburne.
