Why Brea

Brea is a city in northern Orange County, California, situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Encompassing an area of 12.1 square miles, it is bordered by neighboring communities such as La Habra, Fullerton, Placentia, Yorba Linda, and Chino Hills, as well as unincorporated sections of Orange and Los Angeles counties. The city experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate and serves as a major retail center within the region.

The area was originally inhabited for thousands of years by the Indigenous Tongva people, with the village of Hutuknga located nearby. European arrival occurred in 1769 when the Spanish Portolá expedition passed through Brea Canyon. During the nineteenth century, the community of Olinda was founded in Carbon Canyon, drawing interest for its petroleum deposits. Following the transition to American rule, the local economy expanded into agriculture—particularly Valencia oranges—supported by the Santa Fe Railroad. The surrounding oil deposits led to the growth of the Brea-Olinda Oil Field and worker settlements. The town adopted the name Brea, taken from the Spanish word for tar or asphalt, in 1911 and officially incorporated as a city in 1917. Over the mid to late twentieth century, citrus groves and oil fields were gradually replaced by residential neighborhoods, industrial parks, and modern infrastructure.

Today, Brea is noted for its commercial and cultural attractions. Downtown Brea, centered on Brea Boulevard and Birch Street, offers an entertainment and shopping hub featuring outdoor sidewalk cafes, dining establishments, movie theaters, a comedy club, shops, and a weekly farmer's market. Another primary retail destination in the area is the Brea Mall. Cultural enrichment is integrated throughout the municipality via a public art initiative established in 1975, which has positioned more than 140 artworks in locations across the city.

Outdoor recreation and historical features are also situated within the city borders. Visitors can access natural and structural sites such as Carbon Canyon Regional Park and the Carbon Canyon Dam. For historic interest, the Brea City Hall and Park is designated on the national register of historic places.
