Why Clorinda
Clorinda is an Argentine city situated within Formosa Province, where it functions as the capital of the Pilcomayo Department. Positioning itself along the right bank of the Pilcomayo River, the municipality serves as a key international border location. It sits roughly four kilometers from Asunción, the capital of neighboring Paraguay, and approximately 118 kilometers from the provincial capital of Formosa.
According to official census figures from 2022, Clorinda recorded a population of 94,383 residents. This population represents a growth rate of 16.4 percent when measured against the census conducted in 2010. Following this expansion, Clorinda ranks as the second most populous urban center in Formosa Province and holds the 66th spot among the most populated cities in Argentina.
The history of the settlement began in the late nineteenth century when the Hertelendy family acquired the local property through a specialized government concession in 1895. The municipality was formally founded on September 29, 1899. It received its name in honor of Clorinda Pietanera de Bossi, a family relative who looked after Manfredi de Hertelendy throughout his youth.
Positioned at a border crossing, Clorinda operates as a major gateway between Argentina and Paraguay. Road travel across the international frontier is facilitated by the San Ignacio de Loyola International Bridge, which connects directly to the Paraguayan locality of José Falcón. In addition to this primary bridge, a secondary pedestrian crossing known as the Friendship Footbridge spans the boundary to join Clorinda with the nearby settlement of Nanawa.
Travelers accessing or leaving the area utilize several regional transportation links. Long-distance bus services operate out of the Clorinda Bus Terminal Station, providing connections to various destinations across Northern Argentina via National Route 12. Local aviation facilities include Clorinda Airport, which had no commercial airline flights as of 2021. Consequently, the closest active commercial air terminal is Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción, which is serviced by nine passenger airlines and two cargo carriers.
The community is also recognized for its connections to notable public figures. Individuals associated with Clorinda include the politician and national senator José Mayans, the musician and actress Charo Bogarín, and the professional footballer Carlos Soto.
