Why Winter Garden

Situated 14 miles west of Downtown Orlando in western Orange County, Winter Garden is a city within the Orlando metropolitan area. Covering roughly 15.6 square miles, the community borders Lake Apopka to the north, as well as adjacent localities including Ocoee, Windermere, Oakland, Tildenville, and Horizon West. The area features a terrain with gentle to moderate slopes, reaching an elevation of 222 feet at its highest point in the southwest—the peak elevation in the county—and dropping to 64 feet near the lake.

Early regional history includes Indigenous inhabitants who were later succeeded by the Seminole, who maintained a settlement along Lake Apopka until the Seminole Wars of the 1830s. American settlement commenced in the 1850s with farming families cultivating sugarcane and vegetables. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the arrival of the Orange Belt Railroad, alongside timber, turpentine, and citrus industries, spurred municipal growth around Plant Street. Although major freezes in the 1890s and 1980s, along with the decline of a mid-century Lake Apopka fishing boom, shifted the local economy toward modern residential development, Winter Garden continues to celebrate its history with citrus symbols across the city.

The revitalized Winter Garden Downtown Historic District offers a small-town setting anchored by local shops, dining, and cultural venues. Highlights include the Garden Theatre, the Winter Garden Heritage Museum, the Central Florida Railroad Museum, and the historic Luther F. Tilden House. The district also encompasses a historic residential area and serves as a routing point for the West Orange Trail. Every weekend, downtown hosts a popular farmer's market featuring regional produce, plants, baked goods, artisan crafts, food vendors, and live musical entertainment.

Beyond the central district, commercial options include Winter Garden Village, an open-air retail center spanning 1.1 million square feet near Daniels Road and State Road 429. Transportation through the area is facilitated by State Road 50, which bisects the city, and the Western Beltway (State Road 429), connecting Florida's Turnpike with Interstate 4. County Road 535 and County Road 545 provide direct routes south toward Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, and Kissimmee.

Winter Garden experiences a warm, humid subtropical climate with two distinct seasons. A hot, wet period extends from May through October, overlapping with the Atlantic hurricane season, while cooler, drier weather prevails from November through March.
