Why Little Elm
Little Elm is an extended suburb of Denton located in Denton County, Texas, within the broader Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Situated along the northern and eastern shores of Lewisville Lake, the municipality covers a total area of 18.6 square miles, with water accounting for more than twenty percent of its surface. Resting at an average elevation of 545 feet above sea level, the central section of Little Elm is bordered on three sides by the lake, shaping both its geography and local environment.
The community was founded in 1844 by C.C. "Kit" King along local creek banks, after which the settlement was named. King helped organize early mail delivery in the region and became the postmaster of Denton County's first post office in 1852. Little Elm maintained a modest population throughout the first half of the twentieth century before officially incorporating in 1966. In the twenty-first century, it emerged as one of the fastest-growing municipalities by percentage in Texas.
While the town primarily features single-family homes in master-planned neighborhoods, denser living options have been introduced near the town center. The original downtown area, known as The Lakefront, is located around Eldorado Parkway and Main Street. This district has developed into a walkable hub featuring restaurants, retail shops, entertainment venues, and multi-family residential complexes.
Outdoor recreation is centered around the city's five primary public parks: Little Elm Park, Cottonwood Park, Beard Park, McCord Park, and Union Park. Located at the southern terminus of Lobo Lane in The Lakefront district, Cottonwood Park provides access to the Cottonwood Creek Marina. McCord Park encompasses 38 wooded acres and includes walking trails, a playground, a fishing dock, and a disc golf course designed by John Houck.
Little Elm experiences a humid subtropical climate, which is characteristic of the Northeast Texas region. The city is accessible via several primary thoroughfares, including U.S. Route 380, Eldorado Parkway, Farm to Market Roads 423 and 720, and the Dallas North Tollway.
