Why Katima Mulilo
Katima Mulilo serves as the administrative capital of the Zambezi Region in eastern Namibia, situated along the B8 national route on the banks of the Zambezi River. Surrounded by lush riverine vegetation that hosts tropical birds and monkeys, the town recorded a population of 46,401 inhabitants in 2023. Its name is derived from a SiLozi phrase meaning "quench the fire," recalling early river transport along the Zambezi when barge crews extinguished their cooking fires before navigating empty boats over nearby rapids.
The settlement was formally established as a regional administrative seat on January 28, 1935, centered around a single brick building erected beneath a giant baobab tree. Today, this historic tree remains a notable landmark, often called the Toilet Tree because a restroom was carved into its trunk. Long operated as a military garrison, the town retains visible traces of its past, including former South African Defence Force facilities and bomb shelters near older homes. The community evolved through distinct residential districts, including Nghweeze and Katima Mulilo Proper, before officially gaining town status in October 1999.
Culture in Katima Mulilo is shaped by the Lozi people, whose diverse constituent tribes share unified traditions and use the Silozi language. Visitors can explore the region's heritage at the community-based Caprivi Art Centre or during the annual Caprivi Cultural Festival. The town serves as a key commercial node, housing an Export Processing Zone alongside the largest open market in Namibia. Recent infrastructure growth includes the Caprivi Link Inter-Connector power facility and the Zambezi Waterfront Tourism development project.
Katima Mulilo marks the terminal point of the Trans-Caprivi Highway. The opening of the Katima Mulilo Bridge across the Zambezi River in 2004 established a vital link connecting Zambia to Namibia's deep-sea port at Walvis Bay. Air access is provided by Katima Mulilo Airport, situated roughly 18 kilometers southwest of town, which handles regular flights from Windhoek. The local climate is hot and semi-arid, receiving an average of 654 millimeters of rainfall annually, mostly during humid months between November and March, followed by a long dry season with cool winter mornings.
