Why Goose Creek

Goose Creek is the most populous city in Berkeley County, South Carolina, ranking as the seventh largest municipality in the state. Recognized as part of the broader Charleston-North Charleston statistical area, the city encompasses a total area of nearly forty-three square miles, consisting almost entirely of land with a minimal water footprint. Its geography is bordered to the east by the Back River and Cooper River, to the southeast by Charleston, to the southwest by Hanahan and North Charleston, and to the west by the community of Ladson.

While the modern city was officially established in 1961, human settlement in the area spans several centuries. During the 1670s, the Etiwan people migrated to the locality seeking protection from the Westo near plantation properties along Goose Creek, a branch of the Cooper River. Settlers in this region were known as the Goose Creek men and subsequently held influential roles in the colonial government and the regional trade of indigenous captives and deerskins. Historical figures from the area include former governors James Moore and Robert Daniell, and prominent local structures such as the St. James Church and the Otranto Plantation Indigo Vats are recorded on the National Register of Historic Places.

Defense and military infrastructure play a significant role in the local landscape, as the city contains most of Naval Support Activity Charleston. The area is home to the expansive Naval Weapons Station, which became part of Joint Base Charleston upon its formation in 2010. Defense assets operating within the area include the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, the Nuclear Power School, several moored training submarines, the Naval Consolidated Brig, and various military reserve support facilities.

Civic and educational amenities serve the local population across several dedicated centers. Local administration, judicial services, and law enforcement operate out of the Marguerite H. Brown Municipal Center, and public library services are provided through a local branch of the Berkeley County Library System. Secondary education is offered via Goose Creek High School, home to the Berkeley County School of the Arts, alongside Stratford High School. The community is also connected to various notable individuals in public service, sports, and entertainment, including former Charleston mayor Thomas Porcher Stoney, professional athletes Matt Wieters and Justin Smoak, and actress Madelyn Cline.
